Middle Class Crunch

Today we stand at a crossroads, we the middle class have little recourse to effect change as events continue to unfold around us. Or do we?

Unemployment rates are at an all time high and continue to climb. Everyday you turn on your radio or TV and hear that yet another group of workers are being laid off. Since January 2008 over 650,000 have lost their jobs. In the same breath the news mentions that companies are outsourcing work to overseas. Gas prices continue to rise and drive costs of most consumer items and services higher . The financial and housing sectors are near to a meltdown we are in a current financial carnage . Do you feel somewhat overwhelmed? Yes indeed.

You see stories on the internet where individuals or families are lamenting their life, many are living pay check to pay check, and some are losing not only their jobs but their homes. Hey and here is the kicker our administration wonders why our us consumer spending has dropped. Who are they kidding; the stimulus payment has long been spent. So here is the equation, you take away pay increases, add higher gas prices, add higher cost for food and most all other items and services, and you take away jobs and homes. It does not take a rocket scientist to figure out that we are travelling on a downward economic spiral that is going into blackhole mode.

Where is our spirit? Think back to our forefathers when they fought the tyrant Britain to establish the Thirteen Colonies in the American Revolution. They cried out “No taxation without representation.” They held the Boston Tea Party. And Patrick Henry in his famous speech uttered the following words:

“Peace, Peace--but there is no peace. The war is actually begun! The next gale that sweeps from the north will bring to our ears the clash of resounding arms! Our brethren are already in the field! Why stand we here idle? What is it that gentlemen wish? What would they have? Is life so dear, or peace so sweet, as to be purchased at the price of chains and slavery? Forbid it, Almighty God! I know not what course others may take; but as for me, give me liberty or give me death!" March 23, 1775 (Virginia House of Burgess)”

We need to find our fighting spirit, our confidence and our solutions to what we are facing. We must stand up together and say we have had enough.

The current administration has incurred the biggest debt ever in American history and they continue to keep spending. What a legacy to leave our children. The latest scheme is now to bailout the banks and insurance companies and any other institution that jumps on the bandwagon and says they need zillions of dollars. And guess what we the middle class have to pay for all this debt.

Do you realize while the housing market was good those in these very same intuitions were making money hand over fist. They were not cautious, they took untold risks and now you and I have to pay for their mistakes. Get this one, Bush will approve a bill to the tune of $700 billion dollars to bail out these institutions, however when asked by the Democrats if there was money to help Americans with their foreclosures, he simply responded “No, lets keep it clean.” So we pay for the grievous mistakes and overt greed of others and yet we do not get help. This is clearly unacceptable.

Americans need to unite; we need to stand up to our corrupt congress and all their ties with the rich and lobbyists. We must form a movement to address today’s ills. We cannot trust our elected officials; their track record is dismal. It seems they are always gridlocked in debates prolonging effective action or change. Do you really think the new administration, whoever it is, will be that much different? We the people must take a stand and find the spirit to change our course of direction and future. We must save our childrens' future--they should not be strapped with this burdonsome debt.
